Leonard Schlain's The Alphabet vs The Goddess (brief notes)

Dr. Leonard Schlain in his lecture states his theory for the emergence of Patriarchy.

He follows the logic of Marshall Mcluhan: The medium is the message. In this case, his argument is that writing itself, not

He thinks literacy leads to Patriarchy.

He says that when you write, you write with only one hand.
When you read you read only with the cones in your eyes [Unless you're dyslexic! Something to investigate]

His premise is that the Alphabet, reading and writing, led to the dominance of the left hemisphere because it privileges the right hand, tool use, the fovea (which is left hemisphere) and language production.

He equates the left hemisphere with masculine thinking (because tool use, hunting, analytic).

Confucious Jesus Buddha Druids Pythagoras, none of them wrote anything down.

After Roman empire collapses, literacy disappears

The resurrection of the mother goddess through Mary

Printing press invented.
Protestant reformation removes images of Mary
Protestants dress in black and white and read the bible
Catholics suddenly murdered Jews and Moors. "The Age of Reason"

"The men of this culture suffered a psychosis so extreme that they thought their women were so dangerous they had to murder them. And murder them they did, in large numbers"

He states that the witch hunts happen in the middle of the renaissance. They "were most severe in those countries that experienced the steepest rise in literacy."

Then skips to the 19th Century where he says photography does for the image what the printing press did for the written word. Then electromagnetism, and film.

Reading a book: beta waves
Television watching: alpha and theta waves.

Alpha and theta waves are what you generate when you meditate.

Also comments that the holy spirit is a masculine entity due to the translation.
